I thought it was so cool and brought up a lot of questions and commentary about war. I was so interested, I found out more about this great activist and artist. Here is some info that I found from the Associated Press that I thought your listeners would like to know about him: Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., was held by the Nazis in an air-raid shelter during the World War II bomb attack on Dresden as a U.S. Army prisoner of war in 1944-45. Vonnegut's novel "Slaughterhouse 5" dramatizes his experiences as P.O.W. in the east German town of Dresden. Vonnegut, the satirical novelist who captured the absurdity of war and questioned the advances of science in darkly humorous works such as "Slaughterhouse-five" and "Cat's Cradle," and author of over two dozen other books. Vonnegut taught for two years at the University of Iowa's Writer's Workshop in the 1960s. On March 5, 1990 Vonnegut lead a group of picketers outside the Random House Publishing Co. to protest the closure of their Pantheon Books division in New York. He spoke out to reporters on a federal court ruling calling for a trial to determine if a Long Island school board can ban a number of books in 1980. Vonnegut won The Governor's Arts Award in June 29, 1990. Awarded the New York State Edith Wharton Citation of Merit, Jan. 22, 2001 His wife, photographer Jill Krementz, said The 84-year-old author is also reveling in his hometown's declaration of 2007 as "The Year of Vonnegut", an announcement he said left him "thunderstruck."
