Blind Date Stories?

Seeing as how I am going on a blind date sometime soon (first date in over two years, I might add), I thought it would be fun to get some input from you guys. Record yourself telling your story and send me the MP3, or just call and leave it as a voicemail: 206-339-6682.

Also, I still have a ton of CC stuff to give away! Listen to the latest episode of MikeyPod to find out how you can win!

Wanda Wisdom Wednesday!

Everyone’s favorite Lucky Bitch, Wanda Wisdom, invited me to join her on her show today. It’s been a long time since we have been able to chat. I don’t know why I always forget how much I love her, but I do!

Check it out here!

Eye

Yesterday evening my right eye started bothering me, so I took out my contacts (which I normally wear for a couple weeks without removing) to give my eyes a rest. My eye actually started bothering me more when I took the lenses out, but not too bad so I didn’t think too much about it.

I woke up several times during the night with my eye really hurting and watering like crazy, it was insane, but I kept thinking it would probably be better by morning.

When I woke up at 6AM, the eye was still giving me problems, I could barely keep it opened and it was watering like crazy. I called in to work and planned on going to the eye doctor a couple blocks down 6th Avenue from my apartment. As the day has progressed, the eye has gotten much better, though it is still sensitive to light and really red. I decided not to go to the doctor.

Chances are good that this is not any big deal, but it is sad to me that people have to make this decision. “Do I want to eat this week, or do I want to go to the Doctor?” I have to make this decision right now, and it sucks even though I know that chances are good that this won’t be my financial situation forever. Some people have this dilemma all of their lives, while others have easy access to health care. I wonder how many people die from what could be minor health problems because they don’t have the money to check things out when problems first arise.

I know I am stating the obvious here, but do we ever think of it that simply?

“Some people have this dilemma all of their lives, while others have easy access to health care.”

Oooops.

If you are looking for the interview with Joichi Ito from Creative Commons that I promised for today, I am afraid it is on hold due to a mistake in the recording of the conversation. Rather than launch a sub par show, I decided to redo the interview. Thankfully, Joi was gracious enough to agree to reschedule.

In the meantime, how ’bout a little MikeyPod homework? The documentary Good Copy, Bad Copy is what inspired me to invite Joi to be on the show in the first place. It’s only about an hour long, and provides a great backdrop for a conversation about Creative Commons. You can download it (legally) from the site linked above. Here’s the trailer:

Last Push for Troy Anthony Davis

The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles will hear Troy’s case on Monday July 16th at 9:00am. They are the last entity that can spare his life. We can still affect their decision by sending a letter to the Board that will be read before the hearing begins. Now, you can send this letter on line.

Fill out the required information and send your support in for Troy.

This is our last push. To date, over 5,000 letters and postcards have been sent in on Troy’s behalf. Let’s make our voice heard even louder.

Please take this action on behalf of Troy and do your part to save this innocent man.

Hope

I can’t think of a better way to break this couple weeks of MikeyPod dead air than with an update about The Simple Way community in Philly.

From their website:

6/20/07 11:25PM (UPDATED)

This morning, a 7-alarm fire consumed an abandoned warehouse in our Kensington neighborhood in Philadelphia. The Simple Way Community Center at 3200 Potter Street was destroyed as well as at least eight of our neighbors’ homes. Over 100 people were evacuated from their homes, and 400 families are currently without power. Despite this tragedy, we are incredibly thankful to share that all of our community members and every one of our neighbors is safely out of harm’s way.

This fire will forever change the fabric of our community. Eight families are currently homeless, and in many cases have lost their vehicles as well as their homes. One of our neighbors, the Mahaias Family, lost their three cars as well as the equipment one family member uses for her massage therapy business. Teenager Brian Mahaias is devastated not because he has lost his belongings, but because he fears that this fire will force him to move away from this neighborhood that is his family as well as his home.

I have spoken and written about one of the community’s founders, Shane Claiborne so hopefully you have been paying attention. Assuming things are together enough at The Simple Way, Shane will be on the show in early July (no, I haven’t podfaded… maybe just a podcoma). Please take a few minutes to watch the video below, and visit the Simple Way website to see how you can help.

p.s. Look for a MikeyPod episode in the next few days with Joey Piscopo and another with Miss Heather from newyorkshitty.com next week.

Lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice and it all comes down to you.

Today I am leaving my sister’s place in Brooklyn and moving to Eve‘s place in the East Village. I will be staying there for the bulk of the summer, painting and doing minor repairs in exchange for housing. I am hoping this will be the last stop on my nomadic tour of the Eastern half of the United States. I am tired and I want to have my own space.

Was it two years ago that folks like Issa and Brandon bewitched me with the romanticism of this nomadic lifestyle? They were right, of course, and so was I – this has been an amazing year. I experienced the support of the universe or God or whatever that is in the form of all of us that are connected to it. All of my needs have been met, even when I had to be hospitalized in December. I never dreamed I would hear a Doctor say “I couldn’t care less if I get any money from you,” or that I would get an email from a former client asking how she could get $1000.00 to me in order to help with potential hospital expenses. In this whole year of minimal to no income I have not had a day without shelter or food. I’m lucky. Yes.

Even though I have gotten a deep understanding of the fact that I am not my possessions or my income, I miss having a place of my own. There is a certain connection…or maybe a sense of… well, home that I dearly miss in a really soulful way.

So yes, today I carry a few bags into Manhattan and set up “home” in another spare bedroom. It will be exciting to live in the thick of it in New York City, and Eve is such an inspiring friend, I will love being around her when she is in town, but I am longing now, more than ever, to get my employment life in order and start paying rent on my own place again. Who knew I would ever miss paying rent?

My Prediction

In The Heights will be Broadway’s next massive thing . I saw it last night and it is amazing, and is sure to be a hit. It is still Off Broadway, but is moving to Broadway next season. Lush story line, tremendously moving without being manipulative or precious, music that mutates from salsa to hip-hop to Broadway to pop and back. Mark my words…

Birthday 2007

I have been getting some e-mail from people who want to know what i want for my 38th (ouch) birthday this Thursday. While it is certainly not necessary to send me anything, I would hate to deny anyone the pleasure of sending me treats! At the suggestion of the effervescent Cheryl Merkowski, I have updated my Amazon wish list. Have at it!
