MikeyPod 124 | Musician Paul Doucette

July 23, 2008 by Michael Harren

[Lost episode! For an unfortunate period in 2008 I stored a few podcasts on a different server, and then forgot that they were there when I shut it down. If you happen to have a copy of this episode, I would be thrilled to have it again!]

I got to chat with Paul Doucette (Matchbox Twenty) in the bluhammock music office this afternoon about his new project The Break and Repair Method. Here lies our conversation, along with a few tracks off the album which won’t be available till Sept 16th.

Music:
You Won’t Be Able To Be Sad
This City (Is Bound To Do Us In)
Life Gets Beautiful

Many thanks to Ralph Cutler and Christina Duren from Ariel Publicity for setting everything up for me!

In other news, I have decided to make MikeyPod a weekly music only podcast. In the next month or so I will be setting up another podcast feed for everything else. This last year or so in NYC has been such a learning time for me, and a struggle in so many ways, but at last I am feeling like I am where I want to be– loving the city and ready to get my activist self moving again. It always felt so awkward to try to cover both passions in one place: music and social justice. Many times the two intersect, of course, but it makes more sense to me to branch out in this way. Stay Tuned!

p.s. Don’t forget about Meat Free Radio for all of your vegan and vegetarian needs.

About Michael Harren

Brooklyn-based composer and performer Michael Harren combines elements of classical composition with experimental electronics and storytelling to create hypnotic and boldly intimate work that walks the line between Laurie Anderson, Peter Gabriel and Dead Can Dance.

Great interview. Surprised at how much I enjoyed the track. Kinda funny when you said something like, “I don’t really follow Matchbox 20,” and he was totally cool with it. Can you say, “Day job?”

harmz: I am so in love with this album! I’m glad I got the opportunity to do this: the music snob in me may not have given it a chance otherwise. Will I ever grw out of that nonsense??

Heather: I used a sure sm 57 with the marantz, made all the difference in the world and wasn’t really any more difficult to deal with than using the internal mics. We need to hang again soon!

Shawno: “Day job” hehehehehe. I also really got that matchbox really do put out music they are sincere about. I’m almost 40 years old. it’s time to let go of the notion that commercial always = shitty. I mean, it does and everything but….I mean…um…..
