Carol J. Adams goes in the category of podcast guests about whom I thought, “it doesn’t hurt to ask.” I was delighted that she responded almost immediately to my interview request and she was simply lovely to chat with here.
Ms. Adams wrote The Sexual Politics of Meat in 1990 and it has become a “bible of the vegan movement” according to The New York Times. I first came to her work in 1991 through the band Consolidated who included text from The Sexual Politics of Meat on a track of the same name. She tells that backstory here and we discuss everything from veganism to fearlessness to spirituality and everything in between.
I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it!
A brief disclaimer: I know there is some concern about Carol and her alleged transphobia. I chose not to discuss that with her on the podcast, though after speaking with her about it separately, I question the allegations. She wrote about this issue at length on her blog and if you have further concerns that aren’t addressed there, I suggest reaching out to her via her website.
